How to Teach a Dog Down Command

Want to know some dog training tips? If your pooch has misbehaved or does not follow your orders, it’s time to train him down. Teaching your dog how to come when called can be challenging at first but well worth the effort. When you’re teaching a dog a new trick, you want to start by using a single word command (don’t try to get more complicated with the dog training tricks until after you’ve mastered the single word command). To start, use the single word command until your dog has mastered that and then move on to other dog training commands.

What Are Dog Training Tips? A dog training tip is simply a message you send to your dog to prompt the desired action. Most dog training tips are of the simple but necessary (yes, even for you) “sit.” As long as your dog stays sitting on cue throughout a training session, you’ve achieved the dog training tips you set out to achieve. Dog training tips cover the gamut from the most basic (no!) to the easy but necessary (sit.)

How Do You Teach a Dog to Lie Down? The simplest dog training commands would be “down” and “stay.” When your dog has executed these two commands, give a quick reward (food, dog toy, etc.) and/or praise the dog and he will lie down.

Why “down” and “stay?” Dogs are naturally pack animals. They understand that if they follow commands correctly they will be rewarded in the form of treats. So, when your dog performs the “down” and “stay” command, make sure you give him a treat immediately following the command. This will reinforce the behavior and further encourage future sessions.

How Do You Teach a Dog Not to Jump? In most cases, when a dog jumps on you it’s not because he is confused about where his owner is going to be! Instead, dogs are instinctively hunting animals that are moving in a direction that benefits their species. So, whenever you command your dog not to jump, be sure to be in close proximity to him at all times and be ready to offer a treat immediately following the command. You can also add a “down” command for a more effective hunting-style reward.

How Do You Teach a Dog Not to Bite? You do this by training your dog not to bite using powerful body language, such as a firm, powerful grip or closed fist. Dogs use their mouth to feed, drink and communicate, so they have very little control over their jaws when they are learning how to behave. A dog is very likely to bite if excited, frightened or frustrated; it’s a part of their body language.

How Do You Teach a Dog Not to Begging? Dogs don’t beg or bark for attention. They are simply communicating their needs by barking or whining. Dogs that are successfully taught not to bark while being trained for obedience or tricks will start barking non-stop when given a treat. When you’re training a dog not to beg, keep treats on hand but keep the treats away from your dog until after he has learned not to beg.

Teaching your dog a new “down” verbal cue takes a bit of patience and persistence. You’ll need to practice using the verbal cue several times before he begins to expect it. Try using the verbal cue several times before rewarding your dog with a treat, and always praise or give him a “good dog!” after each successful training session. Consistency and patience are the keys to successful dog training.
