The First Step of Loose Lead Walking Training

If you wish to loose lead walking dominance, a very important basic component is FOCUS!! The cool thing is, there are many games out there that will help develop undeniable, awesome focus in your dog training. You do not need to consider this only from a loose lead walking training standpoint. Let’s look at some dog training tips for you to start using to develop strong, powerful leads.

I use a harness in my loose lead walking training, and there is a very good reason for this. There are many dog breeds, which are naturally more inclined to walk on a loose lead (ie. Herding dogs, etc). When you use harness training leads, you are teaching your dog the most efficient way to use a harness, and one which is going to be very important to him or her when you get up in the higher stages of dog training (i.e. “come”, “heel”, etc.)

Another very powerful loose lead walking training tip is to always use your training leash. Some people who use leashes have problems with them getting snagged around corners, etc., but that is an extremely rare problem with my dogs! All I see is consistent happy dogs walking freely across our property with their leashes still attached! Of course, it is also very important to always use a quality dog leash and never get too carried away with the fancy leather ones!

One more simple dog training tip I can share with you is to always keep your eye on your puppy while you walk. Puppies love to look out from under the leads, and they may be cute, but they are also going to want to look at you. Keep an eye on them. They will eventually learn to look after themselves and ignore your commands, but it takes time. You should also not be afraid to call your dog by name while walking. They love it when you do that.

So now we come to the part where I often times use the old-fashioned lead to train my puppies, and loose leads for myself. In general, I find lead training to be much more effective than using a collar or a harness. The main reason is because you get used to how your dog acts around you as well as the lead. If you have never done lead training before, I highly recommend that you start out with a loose lead walking training puppy, as it will strengthen your bond with each other.

Here is another simple dog training tip I can share with you: When you are walking your dog on a loose lead, don’t give him or her too much room or praise. The puppy needs to know that if they follow your command, you are happy with them. If you are holding your dog by the lead and he does not follow, do not scold them. This can start to make them fear you and keep them from following your commands in the future. It takes practice and patience to gain the skills needed to properly train your dog, and this tip will help you speed up the process.

The final dog training tip I want to give you today deals with the topic of being patient. The dog training process does not happen overnight. Your puppy may not always listen to you, or your dog may not always follow your commands. These things take time, and if you expect to have a dog that follows your every command, you will have to develop and practice patience. Remember, your dog is not brain surgery, so you must be patient.

As previously stated, the first step to getting your new puppy to walk on a loose leash is to find him a good collar and leash. You will also need to select an excellent harness. Now, after you have found both of these items and you are ready to begin training, it is important to remember that you do not have to rush into everything at once. Patience is crucial for any dog training, especially if you have just gotten your puppies. Start out slowly and you will see your dog get the hang of using the harness and collar.
