How to Teach a Dog to Come

Teaching your dog to come is one of the most important dog training tricks you can teach him. It s a relatively easy basic command to teach but challenging to teach since there is just so much that can distract your dog from coming when you are trying to teach him. But it s worth the effort, since proper recall can prevent your dog from being pulled into something harmful, running off in front of a busy road, or being attacked by an angry wild animal such as a raccoon. Teaching your dog to come requires patience and consistency on your part and your dog will eventually learn it.

In order to teach your dog how to come easily, you need to establish three major things. First you need to be consistent with your training. Don t allow your dog to run loose so that he will know that when you say “come” and he hears you then he should go to where you told him. I recommend that you train your dog using a spray dog training collar which has a small clip attached to it so when your dog pulls on the leash and yelps he knows to stop pulling. The spray makes it difficult for him to pull.

The second thing you need to establish when teaching your dog these commands is that he must recognize your voice. Dogs have very poor vision even at distances which is why they are good candidates for learning how to come when called. Use a quiet, steady voice when saying the commands. You don t want your voice to whack your dog over the head with instructions. You also need to use your hands while giving the commands to emphasize the fact that YOU are in charge and not the dog.

Here are some more tips on how to teach a dog to stand tall. First, always be sure that your dog is following your commands not just because you tell him. Be sure that before you start any dog training trick or technique that you do these basic commands: Come, Sit, Stay, Heel, Down, Stay, and Stay. These are the basic commands that will teach him the basic things that all dogs must learn to master.

When I was trying to train my dog using these dog training tips I found that most of the time my dog would do the things that I said but would do them better if I gave them positive reinforcement. When positive reinforcement is used on a dog, the dog learns that when you give them a treat they will perform the trick or behavior that you told them to do. With these tips on how to train a dog to come, I found that with consistent training and positive reinforcement, my dog would respond well to these training techniques.

The second tip I have is in dog training tricks where you tell your dog to sit and then give them a treat. I use a hand with one of my dogs fingers placed at the base of his back, so if he tries to sit he can touch my hand instead of hitting his bottom. I tell him “sit” and I pull his back towards me. If he goes down, I pull him back up so that I don’t hurt him. I have him sit on me and I give him a treat and praise him. This has worked great with him and it has also worked out wonderfully with our other dogs.

I have also had success with using toys as training aids. I got a rubber dog bone for my lab puppy Cash and he loves to run circles around it while I am reading a book or doing something else that he doesn’t have to sit on. I love to play with him and use the rubber bones as a reward when he completes his tasks for me. He learns to sit on the dog bone and when he stays still while I am reading I reward him with a treat.

Training for puppies should be fun and rewarding for both dog and owner. Use positive reinforcement when training and try to set a good example of behavior by not hitting your pup when he does something wrong. Be consistent and do not leave any treats or rewards loose. If you follow these easy to understand and easy to practice dog training tips your pup will soon be thinking of you when he has a behavior problem and you will be getting a high level of obedience training from your pup.
