How to train your dog not to leap on guests? This is actually a very common behavior problem among many dog breeds. The reason for this is that it is hard for dogs to control their urges. So basically, when they jump on people they are just showing their affection and joy for whatever it is. In order to curb this behavior in your dog, you must first understand and know some of the dog training tricks that you can use.

One of the easiest and most effective ways on how to train your dog not to jump on guests is by establishing yourself as the pack leader. Now you might be wondering what exactly this means. Well, basically, you first have to realize what jumping means in dog training terms. When dogs jump on people, they are showing their excitement and happiness for whatever it is.

For example, if your dog is excited about a new dog treat you gave him then he would naturally jump on you and try to get the treat from you. Now remember that you’re standing and you’re not sitting down so he could easily fall down on you. Therefore, in order to correct this behavior you should first give your dog a sit command followed by a low and firm release of your sit command. After which, immediately let go of him and immediately praise him for not jumping on you. Do this with your other dogs as well, because it will definitely train a dog not to jump on guests.

Another great training tip is to make your dog understand and know the meaning of, “good morning” and “good evening”. It is imperative that you teach your dog how to greet people properly when they arrive home. One way to do this is to start off each day by saying hi to your dog and then take a short jump into the yard and say hi again to your dog. Doing this consistently and using pleasant verbal cues will make it easier for you and your dog to greet each other properly.

When you are training your dog not to leap on guests, one more important thing to keep in mind is that you should focus all of your training attention on the person who is going to be arriving at your house. This is the person who you want your dog to focus his or her attention on. So, when you are walking your dog on a leash, take your dog’s attention away from the guest and let someone else take over the task of greeting the guest.

In order to train your dog not to leap on guests, another thing you need to remember is that you should never use your dog as a means of protection. If someone tries to attack your dog while you are on a leash, it is better for you to step in between them and the potential assailant using your dog as a defense mechanism. You would be surprised at how many people attempt to attack other people while their dogs are leashed by the owner. It is better for you to step in and to protect the person that was trying to attack you. When you are doing so, make sure that you are only stepping in to defend yourself if your dog charges the person.

The idea is for your dog to learn how to be a good watchdog for you but also learn to be a respectful dog. Training your dog to greet people politely is one way that you can teach him or her how to be a friend to strangers as well. One great way that you can train your dog not to leap on guests is to teach your dog how to be a sitting dog. This involves teaching your dog how to sit on cue by giving him or her a treat. Once your dog has learned that he or she is going to get a treat when it is his or her turn to sit, then guests can come and sit down without having to worry about getting jumped on.

Training your dog to always sit is another good behavior modification technique. The idea is for your dog to learn that when it is his or her turn to sit, he or she will get a treat as a reward. You can also try using the command “stay” and saying the command “sit” in a clear voice. By repeating this command several times, your dog will be used to performing the command and will likely stop leaping on guests when they are around.
